有一天，在美國的邊境，美國移民局警察抓住了一位外國的偷渡者，美國邊境的移民局主管對那位偷渡者說，“你為什麼要偷渡美國？”那位偷渡者對著移民局主管以英語莊嚴地宣讀《美國獨立宣言》；宣讀完全文後，他走到美國國旗旁，莊嚴地面對著國旗，並虔誠地把手放在胸前後宣誓，“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
接著，他認真地唱起了美國的國歌“The Star-Spangled Banner”與“God Bless America”；他唱完後，美國邊境的移民局主管深受感動地說，“我知道你是美國人！”
