Anointed to Heal and Set Free

Anointed to Heal and Set Free

Luke 4:18 records Jesus proclaiming the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed.”

This declaration marks the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry and outlines His divine mission—rooted in love, power, and the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

Throughout the Gospels, we see this mission fulfilled. Jesus preached to the poor (Matthew 5:3), healed the sick and brokenhearted (Matthew 9:35; Luke 7:13–15), cast out demons (Mark 1:34), and gave sight to the blind (John 9:6–7).

Jesus proclaimed the freedom of the oppressed (John 8:36) and called all those who labored and bore heavy burdens to come to Him to rest (Matthew 11:28-30).The anointing of the Holy Spirit is not to establish personal glory, but to help people receive the gospel of truth and obtain salvation.

Yet Jesus also said, “As the Father has sent Me, I also send you” (John 20:21). Believers are called to continue His mission.

But only those who love God with all their heart and soul, keep His commandments, and do the will of God can truly walk in the Spirit and understand the meaning of Luke 4:18.

It is not enough to admire Christ’s compassion—we must embody it. As Paul wrote, “It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20).

Only those true disciples of Jesus can be anointed to bring good news to a world in need, heal people, and help people gain freedom-realizing Luke 4:18, not just as readers of the Bible, but as actors who do God's will (James 1:22).
