Curses and Blessings

 Curses and Blessings

In this unbelieving and corrupt generation, what must a person do to receive God’s blessings? And why do so many people spend their entire lives living under God’s curse?

From the very beginning, God has set before humanity both blessings and curses, allowing each person the freedom to choose the path they will follow. The Scriptures repeatedly reveal that a person’s experiences and ultimate destiny are not determined by chance or fate, but are closely connected to whether he fears God, listens to His voice, and faithfully obeys His commandments.

Those who rebel against God’s will will ultimately come under His judgment and curse. In contrast, those who wholeheartedly and sincerely obey God’s Word will inherit His abundant grace and blessings. Therefore, every wise person should choose the path of obedience to God and walk faithfully in His truth.

1. Choosing the Path That Brings God’s Curse

Deuteronomy 28:15

“But if you do not obey the LORD your God and do not carefully follow all His commandments and statutes that I am giving you today, all these curses will come upon you and overtake you.”

1 Samuel 12:15

“But if you do not obey the voice of the LORD, but rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then the hand of the LORD will be against you, as it was against your fathers.”

Leviticus 26:21

“If you remain hostile toward Me and refuse to listen to Me, I will multiply your afflictions seven times over, according to your sins.”

Leviticus 26:18

“If after all this you still will not listen to Me, I will punish you seven times over for your sins.”

Joshua 24:20

“If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, then after He has done you good, He will turn and bring disaster upon you and consume you.”

These passages clearly teach that those who refuse to obey God’s Word will come under His curse and judgment. Much of the suffering people experience is the consequence of rejecting and resisting God’s will.

2. Choosing the Path That Brings God’s Blessing

Deuteronomy 28:1

“If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully keep all His commandments that I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth.”

Deuteronomy 28:2–6

“All these blessings will come upon you and accompany you if you obey the LORD your God. Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the country. Blessed shall be the fruit of your womb, the produce of your ground, and the offspring of your livestock—the increase of your herds and the young of your flock. Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.”

Deuteronomy 11:13–15

“If you faithfully obey the commandments I give you today, loving the LORD your God and serving Him with all your heart and with all your soul, then He will send rain on your land in its season, both the autumn and the spring rains, so that you may gather your grain, new wine, and olive oil. He will provide grass in the fields for your livestock, and you will eat and be satisfied.”

Deuteronomy 4:1

“Now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and judgments that I am teaching you to observe, so that you may live and enter and possess the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you.”

Deuteronomy 8:1

“Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase in number and enter and possess the land the LORD promised on oath to your ancestors.”

These passages clearly teach that those who obey God’s Word will receive His blessings. A life of blessing is often the result of faithfully following God’s will.

Conclusion

God has placed before every person both blessings and curses and has entrusted each individual with the responsibility of making a choice. The Bible clearly teaches that God’s blessings are not obtained by chance, nor are they earned through human wisdom, ability, or wealth. Rather, they are founded upon fearing God, listening to His voice, and faithfully keeping His commandments.

Likewise, God’s curse is often the consequence of rebellion against Him and the rejection of His Word. Therefore, everyone who desires to receive God’s blessings should meditate on His Word day and night, fear Him wholeheartedly, and obey His Word with all their heart and soul, so that their lives may walk in His truth.

As they do so, God’s grace, peace, joy, and abundant blessings will remain with them forever, enabling them to become faithful witnesses who serve Him and bring glory to His holy name.
