Born Again Only in Christ
“Being born again” is directly related to whether a person can enter the Kingdom of God. Jesus fulfilled the will of the Father by going to the cross, and through His blood God provided redemption for all humanity, making reconciliation with Himself possible. Yet if a person deliberately continues in sin after receiving this grace, the sacrifice for sin is no longer being embraced in truth.
Only by obeying the words of Jesus can a person truly be in Christ. Only by being in Christ can a person be born again. Without being in Christ, there is no new birth.
Those who are not in Christ are not born again; they do not know the truth, they remain in sin, they belong to the world, and spiritually they are under the influence of darkness. Those who are in Christ are born again; they are new creations, citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven, children of God, and people set apart in holiness.
When a person wholeheartedly obeys the commandments of Jesus, Christ dwells within him. When Christ dwells within him, he remains in Christ; and in that abiding union, he is born again.
A born-again believer repents of sin, turns back to God, obeys the words of Jesus, pursues holiness, and walks in the light. He seeks first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. He serves God sincerely and seeks to glorify Him. He denies himself, takes up his cross, follows Christ, and moves toward the Kingdom of Heaven and eternal life.
Jesus declared in John 3:3, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” This is not merely a matter of identity or title, but the difference between having spiritual life and not having it.
Many people assume that baptism alone is new birth, that attending church equals salvation, that doing good works guarantees entry into heaven. But Jesus never taught this. He taught that a person must be born of God.
Being born again is not a religious formality, nor merely an increase in knowledge or emotional experience. It is the beginning of a new life from God—a life that comes when a person fully obeys the words of Jesus and allows God’s life to enter within.
Without this new birth, all outward religious activity is only appearance. Without it, a person remains in the old life and has no part in the Kingdom of God.
Therefore, being born again is not simply a doctrine—it is a matter of eternal destiny.
1. The Purpose of New Birth: To See and Enter the Kingdom of God
John 3:3
Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”
John 3:5
“Unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”
These verses show clearly that new birth is essential. Without it, no one can see or enter God’s Kingdom.
2. How a Person Is Born Again
(1) Through the Word of God
1 Peter 1:23
You have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.
1 John 5:1
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God.
John 14:15
“If you love me, keep my commandments.”
God’s Word brings new birth. Faith in Christ leads to obedience. Through obedience to God’s Word, new life is formed.
(2) By the Mercy of Jesus
Titus 3:5
He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy, through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.
(3) By Receiving Christ
John 1:12–13
To all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, but born of God.
New birth is being born of God. Those who receive Christ become children of God.
(4) By Abiding in Christ Through Obedience
John 14:23
“If anyone loves me, he will obey my word… and we will come to them and make our home with them.”
Obedience leads to Christ dwelling within us, and thus we remain in Him.
(5) New Creation in Christ
2 Corinthians 5:17
If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here!
New birth produces a transformed life.
3. Characteristics of the Born-Again Life
A born-again believer:
* Loves others (1 John 4:7)
* Has living water flowing within (John 7:38)
* Does not continue in sin (1 John 3:9)
* Lives a sanctified life (2 Timothy 2:21–22)
* Walks in holiness (1 Peter 1:15–16)
* Is transformed in mind (Romans 12:1–2)
* Is led by the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:14)
* Bears fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23)
* Abides in Christ (John 15:5)
* Has eternal life (1 John 5:11–12)
* Is clothed with Christ’s nature (Colossians 3:9–10)
* Lives in peace and joy (John 14:27; Philippians 4:6–7; Romans 15:13)
These are not optional traits—they are the evidence of true spiritual life.
Conclusion
Biblically speaking, being born again is not an abstract idea but a real transformation of life with visible fruit.
A truly born-again person will obey Christ, pursue holiness, bear spiritual fruit, and abide in Him. God does not look at outward religious appearance, but at whether a person truly has His life within.
Only those who are born of God—those who obey His will and follow Christ with their whole heart—will enter His Kingdom.
Therefore, each person must examine themselves sincerely before God:
Am I truly born of God? Does my life bear the marks of Christ?
For in the end, it is not religious identity that leads to eternal life, but a life truly born of God and lived in obedience to Jesus Christ.
