The Deception of “Slain in the Spirit”

The Deception of “Slain in the Spirit”

In these last days, many gatherings and revival meetings exalt the phenomenon known as “slain in the Spirit.” Some even regard it as a manifestation of the Holy Spirit’s presence and power. However, we must return to Scripture itself and carefully discern: Is this phenomenon truly from God? Does it align with the revelation of His Word?

The Bible never teaches that a person can actively “knock others down,” nor does any apostle or prophet present causing people to fall as a mark of ministry. On the contrary, Scripture consistently shows that when God’s glory, holiness, and power are revealed, people respond with reverence, trembling, and humility.

Therefore, we must examine God’s Word with a reverent heart, discerning what is truly the work of the Holy Spirit and what may be human emotion, personal intention, or even deception that departs from the truth. Otherwise, in pursuing spiritual experiences, we risk straying from God’s pure will.

1. The Enemies of God Fell Backward Before His Power

John 18:6

When Jesus was arrested, He said, “I am He,” and they drew back and fell to the ground.

This passage shows that those opposing Him fell backward under the power of His word. It demonstrates that people may fall before God’s authority, yet this is not “being slain in the Spirit.”

2. When God’s Glory Came, the Priests Could Not Stand

2 Chronicles 5:13–14

At the dedication of Solomon’s temple, “the glory of the Lord filled the house, so that the priests could not stand to minister.”

This reveals that when God’s glory appears, human strength fails.

3. Daniel Lost Strength and Fell Before God’s Revelation

Daniel 10:8–9

Daniel saw a vision and said, “No strength remained in me, and I fell into a deep sleep with my face to the ground.”

This shows that in the presence of divine revelation, a person may lose all strength and fall.

4. Saul Fell to the Ground When Heaven’s Light Shone

Acts 9:3–4

As Saul approached Damascus, a light from heaven suddenly shone around him, and he fell to the ground.

This demonstrates that encountering God’s intervention results in a person falling, and it is initiated by God, not man.

5. God’s Servants Fell in Humility Before Him

Revelation 1:17

And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as though dead. And He laid His right hand upon me, saying, “Fear not; I am the first and the last.”

Isaiah 6:5

Then I said, “Woe is me, for I am undone, because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.”

Luke 5:8

When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”

When the Apostle John encountered the Lord, he fell at His feet as though dead. When Isaiah beheld the glory of the Lord, he cried, “Woe is me, for I am undone.” When Simon Peter saw the power of Christ, he fell at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man.”

These passages reveal a consistent truth: when God’s people truly encounter Him, their response is not excitement or outward display, but deep conviction of sin, reverence, and humble repentance before His holiness.

Conclusion

From these Scriptures, we can clearly conclude that it is not the Holy Spirit who knocks people down, but the glory of God that causes man to be unable to stand. Believers should not pursue being “slain,” but instead understand the biblical posture of falling in reverence. When someone claims the ability to knock others down, such claims lack biblical foundation and may not be from God. Encountering God is not a performance of falling, but a revelation of His holiness. The Holy Spirit does not promote outward displays, but leads people to repentance and return to God.

Falling before God is never the result of human manipulation, but a natural response when God reveals Himself in His holiness and glory.

Whether it was soldiers falling backward, priests unable to stand, prophets losing strength, Saul falling in the light, or John, Isaiah, and Peter falling in repentance, all point to one truth. Those who truly encounter God do not exalt themselves, but become aware of their unworthiness and respond with humility and repentance.

Therefore, disciples of Jesus must remain watchful. If anyone claims to “slay others in the Spirit” and presents it as a sign of power or anointing, such practices not only lack biblical support, but also shift the focus from God to man.

The true work of the Holy Spirit always produces a revelation of God’s glory and holiness, conviction of sin, reverence toward God, and genuine repentance and transformation. It does not produce superficial or deceptive spiritual experiences.

Disciples of Christ are called to be set apart, to know God, to fear Him, to turn back to Him, and to obey His Word wholeheartedly, allowing the Holy Spirit to accomplish a true inward transformation rather than pursuing outward spiritual displays.

Knowing Jesus: The Revelation of the Way, the Truth, and the Life

Knowing Jesus: The Revelation of the Way, the Truth, and the Life

In these end times, many claim to know Jesus, yet because they do not understand His divinity, essence, and mission, they are among those whom Jesus does not know. Truly knowing Jesus is not merely a verbal confession but worshipping Him in spirit, obeying His commands, and living out His will.

John 4:23–24 states:

"Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth."

This scripture points out that Christ is the Truth. If a person does not know Jesus, they do not know the Truth and are therefore unable to worship God in spirit and in truth. The devil always seeks to distort the nature and attributes of the Lord Jesus so that people fail to recognize Him, ultimately causing them to lose the salvation that comes from Him.

In John 14:15, the Lord Jesus reminds us:

"If you love me, keep my commands."

In John 8:31, He further says:

"To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, 'If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.'"

This tells us that knowing Jesus is not based on oral confession alone, but on continually obeying His commands and transforming His Word into our very life.

I. The Lord Jesus is God and the Son of God

John 1:1, 14

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God... The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory... full of grace and truth."

John 3:16 says:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever continues to believe in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”

John 3:36 says:

Whoever is believing in the Son has eternal life, but whoever is not obeying the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.

From these scriptures, it is clear that those who do not believe Jesus is God, nor believe He is the Son of God, cannot obtain eternal life. For example, followers of Judaism and Islam do not believe that Jesus is God or the Son of God.

II. Jesus and the Father Are One

John 10:30

"I and the Father are one."

From this verse, we know that Jesus and the Father are one. Those who do not believe Jesus is God do not truly know Him and will be unable to receive the salvation that comes through Him.

Mormonism views Jesus as the "firstborn spirit son of Heavenly Father." However, Jesus is not a created spirit son but the Eternal Son of God (God the Son), co-eternal and co-glorious with the Father.

They claim Jesus is one of many spirit beings who was "begotten," that He is not eternally self-existent, that the Father has a physical body, and that Jesus and the Father are two separate gods rather than one in divine essence. Their teachings even suggest that humans can "become gods."

Mormonism advocates for "Three Gods, Three Beings" (the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit).

They believe the three are entirely separate entities, each with their own personhood and substance, united only in "purpose and mind." This contradicts the teachings of Jesus.

III. The Lord Jesus is the Creator, Not a Created Angel

John 1:3

"Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made."

Colossians 1:16

"For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him."

These two verses prove that the Lord Jesus is the Creator. He created all things, including angels; He is not a created angel Himself.

Jehovah’s Witnesses claim Jesus is the Archangel Michael. They believe Jesus is a created spirit, the first "Son of God" to be made, rather than the Eternal and Almighty God. This view is contrary to Biblical teaching.

IV. The Lord Jesus is the Mediator Between God and Man

1 Timothy 2:5

"For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus."

Matthew 6:9–13

This, then, is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

These scriptures show that Jesus is the mediator between God and man. He commanded us to pray to the Father and He Himself frequently prayed to the Father.

The Local Church (Lord's Recovery) addresses Jesus directly in prayer but fails to follow His command to pray to the Heavenly Father. In doing so, they effectively negate the status of Jesus as the Mediator between God and man.

V. The Lord Jesus is the Only Way, Truth, and Life

John 14:6

Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

On May 31, 1997, during an interview with Robert Schuller, Billy Graham denied the exclusivity of the Gospel. He suggested that those who do not know Jesus—whether from the Muslim world, the Buddhist world, or non-believers—could still be saved.

In 1978, Graham also stated: "I used to think that pagans in far-off countries were lost and would go to hell if they did not have the Gospel of Jesus Christ preached to them. I no longer believe that... I believe there are other ways of recognizing the existence of God—through nature, for instance."

However, according to Scripture, Christ is the only way, truth, and life. If one does not go through Christ, how can they reach the Father? Billy Graham’s statements are inconsistent with the teachings of Jesus.

Conclusion

The Bible clearly teaches: The Lord Jesus is God and the Son of God; only those who believe in Him will have eternal life. Jesus and the Father are one; He is not a created spirit.

Furthermore, Jesus is the Creator of all things. He is the sole Mediator between God and man, the only way for humanity to approach the Father. Apart from Him, no one can reach God.

If a person does not go through Jesus or understand Him, they cannot truly worship God or receive salvation. Any claim that salvation can be found through other means or religions contradicts the teachings of Jesus.

Only those who truly know and believe in Jesus can establish an eternal relationship with God the Father; those who do not know Him, regardless of their religious background, will not be saved. Amen.
