How Can We Know That We Have Eternal Life?
In this end-time generation, how can a person know that he or she has eternal life?
1 John 5:12
“Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.”
1 John 5:13
“I have written these things to you who are continually believing in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know with certainty that you possess eternal life.”
From these two passages, we understand that whoever has the Son of God has life, and those who possess the Son can know that they have eternal life. The important question, therefore, is: How can a person receive the Son of God?
John 14:23
Jesus answered, "Anyone who loves me will keep my word. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them."
From this scripture, we see that by obeying Jesus' teachings, a person gains the indwelling of Christ. When one experiences this indwelling, they possess the Son of God, they have eternal life, and they can be assured of their salvation.
Conclusion
In these end times, people are often preoccupied with the pursuit of fleeting success, wealth, and pleasure, yet they overlook the most vital question of existence: Have I obtained eternal life? The Bible clearly reveals that eternal life is not something that can be earned through human effort, good deeds, or religious rituals; rather, it is a gift of grace bestowed by God through His Son, Jesus Christ.
1 John 5:12–13 teaches us that the assurance of eternal life is not based on subjective feelings, personal assumptions, or human confidence, but on the objective reality of truly possessing Jesus Christ. Those who have the Son of God have life, and through faith in Him, believers can have the certainty that they possess eternal life.
As Jesus declared in John 14:23, those who truly love Him will willingly keep His word. This obedience is not merely an external religious practice, but the evidence of a genuine relationship with Christ. When believers walk in obedience to His teachings, the Lord Jesus dwells within them, transforming their lives and granting them the new life that comes from God.
A person can examine whether they have eternal life through three reflections:
Faith: Do you trust in Jesus Christ as your Savior?
Obedience: Do you have a sincere longing to follow His word?
Presence: Have you experienced the presence and transformation of Christ within your life?
When Christ dwells in us, we no longer belong to the darkness but have entered into the life that God has given.
Eternal life is not merely a hope for a future in heaven; it is a life of walking with Jesus today. May every believer hold fast to God's promise, rest in the assurance of their eternal life, and remain steadfast in faith—obeying the Lord's way as we eagerly await the glorious return of Christ.
