The Assurance of Eternal Life

In this perverse and unbelieving generation, how can one examine themselves to see if they possess the assurance of eternal life?

Romans 6:23

"For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

1 John 5:11-13

"And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life."

From these scriptures, we see that if one is in Christ, they possess eternal life; if one is not in Christ, they cannot possess it. So, how does one come to be in Christ?

John 14:23

"Jesus replied, 'If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.'"

From this verse, we understand that if one keeps Jesus' word, they receive the indwelling of Jesus, they remain in Christ, and thereby receive eternal life.

How, then, does John 14:23 echo the words of the Lord Jesus elsewhere?

Matthew 7:21

"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who continuously does the will of My Father in heaven."

This passage shows that only those who persistently do the will of the Father can continue on the path toward the kingdom of heaven and receive eternal life. Only those who persevere in obeying God’s will until death will ultimately enter the kingdom of heaven and attain eternal life.

Conclusion

The assurance of eternal life is the most vital spiritual foundation for every person who trusts in Jesus Christ. However, true assurance is not built upon personal feelings, religious rituals, or mere verbal declarations. Rather, it is built upon a disciple’s obedience to God’s word and the renewal of life found in Christ.

As stated in the First Epistle of John, God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son; he who has the Son has life. Therefore, whether one is truly in Christ is the core of the assurance of salvation.

All who abide in Christ will inevitably manifest a life that loves the Lord, and the practical expression of this love is keeping His word. Jesus taught us: "If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him." This demonstrates that Christ’s indwelling and a person’s obedience to Jesus’ word are inseparable. A truly born-again life goes beyond just calling upon the Lord’s name; it is characterized by a daily willingness to seek God’s will and follow His word.

Therefore, the assurance of salvation must be verified by the fruit of one’s life. The Lord Jesus reminds us: "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven." This does not mean that one is saved by works; rather, it means that true faith will inevitably produce a life that obeys God’s will.

In these end times, disciples of Jesus must constantly examine themselves: Are we truly in Christ? Do we love God and keep His commandments? Are we holding fast to our faith until the very end of our lives? Only by the grace of God and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, while faithfully following the Lord all our days, can we possess the assurance of eternal life in Christ and look forward to entering the glorious kingdom God has prepared for us.
