Spirit-led interpretation: “Love Your Neighbor as Yourself” and “Love One Another”

Spirit-led interpretation: “Love Your Neighbor as Yourself” and “Love One Another”

In these last days, many people interpret Jesus’ teachings on “love your neighbor as yourself” and “love one another” through the lens of human reasoning and worldly culture.

Because they do not know God and do not truly know Jesus Christ, they obscure the will of God. As a result, many lose sight of God’s salvation. If a person loses God’s salvation, how can he enter the Kingdom of Heaven and receive eternal life?

1. Love One Another

John 15:12

“This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”

What does Jesus mean when He says, “as I have loved you”?

John 3:16

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever continually believes into Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.”

From these two passages, we see that believers are called to love others in the same manner that Jesus loved them. Jesus expressed His love by revealing the truth and bringing people to God’s salvation. The purpose of His love was to help people follow Him, enter the Kingdom of Heaven, and receive eternal life.

Therefore, biblical love is not merely an emotional feeling or an act of kindness; it is a love that seeks the eternal well-being of others by leading them to the truth of God and the salvation found in Jesus Christ.

2. Love Your Neighbor as Yourself

Matthew 22:37–39

Jesus replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Leviticus 22:31

“Keep My commandments and obey them. I am the Lord.”

These passages teach that a person must love God with all his heart, soul, and mind. Only then can he wholeheartedly obey God’s commandments. Through such obedience, he is able to fulfill the command to love his neighbor as himself.

From Luke 10:29–37, the Parable of the Good Samaritan, we learn that the “neighbor” Jesus referred to is a person who is in need of help and mercy.

To love one’s neighbor as oneself, a person must first love himself rightly. How, then, should a person love himself according to Jesus’ teaching?

Jesus loved people by leading them to the truth and to God’s salvation. Therefore, loving oneself begins with personally receiving the truth, following Christ, and obtaining God’s salvation. If a person does not seek the truth and salvation for himself, how can he effectively help others find the truth and receive God’s salvation?

From Jesus’ perspective, loving one’s neighbor as oneself includes helping others come to know the truth and receive God’s salvation. Otherwise, how can one fully obey Christ’s command to love his neighbor as himself?

Conclusion

From these passages, we can understand that the biblical teachings of “love one another” and “love your neighbor as yourself” involve far more than emotional concern or material assistance. At their core, they point people to Jesus Christ, the truth of God, and the salvation that He alone provides.

True love is centered on continually following God’s will. It seeks to help people turn away from sin, repent and return to God, obey the commands of Jesus, abide in Christ, and walk in the light. Ultimately, its goal is that people may enter the Kingdom of Heaven and receive eternal life.

Therefore, disciples of Jesus should first love God with all their heart, soul, and mind, obey His Word, and remain in Christ. Then, through the love of Christ, they should care for and serve others, helping more people come to know the truth, receive Jesus Christ, obey His commands, become His disciples, and receive God’s salvation.

In doing so, they truly fulfill the Lord’s commands to “love one another” and to “love your neighbor as yourself.” Amen.
