A Call to Truth in the Last Days

A Call to Truth in the Last Days — Following the Way Jesus Trained His Disciples

Awakening in a Turbulent Generation

In these final days, all nations are witnessing with their own eyes the collective fulfillment of prophetic words. The world is in the midst of intense upheaval: false christs and false prophets are deceiving multitudes with lies; the clamor of wars and the shadows of unrest cover the earth; famine, pestilence, and earthquakes are sounding across every land.

As believers face fiery trials and persecution, and as the love of many grows cold because of the increase of lawlessness, we hear a call from heaven: the true gospel of Christ must shine like a bright lamp, spreading swiftly to the ends of the earth, preparing a straight path for the glorious return of the King.

The True Calling of Discipleship: Returning to the Holy Word of Christ

The Lord Jesus gave His disciples the Great Commission. This is not merely a missionary task, but a complete transformation of life. Yet the pressing question remains: how must one live to truly be called a disciple of Christ? True discipleship is not the cultivation or transfer of worldly knowledge, but the total surrender of one’s life and soul to God. The following passages reveal the only divine path by which Jesus Himself trained His disciples.

A Warning: The Broad Road to Destruction and Man-Made Godliness

Those who love the world often resist Christ’s teachings marked by the cross. They are unwilling to obey the Lord with all their heart, soul, and mind, and unwilling to pursue the presence of the Holy Spirit with reverence and trembling. Instead, they seek to invent “easier” paths that dilute the cost of the gospel, giving rise to distorted messages—worldly grace, success gospel, prosperity gospel, cheap grace, and passive faith.

This is the tragedy of many worldly churches today. They replace spiritual power with worldly methods. They delight in group discussions, study materials, and sharing personal experiences or opinions, yet amid all the noise, they lose their reverence for Christ.

These worldly churches claim to train disciples, yet they themselves are not disciples of Jesus. They frequently discuss Scripture, yet do not exalt Christ; they organize fellowship, yet do not give Jesus first place; they seek blessings, yet are unwilling to love the Lord more than their own lives; they pursue human approval, yet refuse to confess their sins before God with a broken and contrite heart.

They speak of God’s love, yet do not teach obedience to Jesus’ command to love one’s neighbor as oneself and to love one’s enemies. They use Scripture to improve earthly living, yet do not call people to crucify the flesh and deal with sin. They discuss the Word superficially, yet refuse to abide in it and live out the life of Christ. They say they follow Jesus, yet do not teach that one must forsake everything for Him. They encourage evangelism, yet do not warn that those who preach the gospel will suffer persecution for His sake.

They delight in speaking of God’s grace, yet do not tell people to take up their cross. They proclaim that God saves, yet do not explain the way of receiving His salvation. They pursue family harmony and career success, yet do not seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness. They encourage people to be worldly Christians, yet fail to remind them to pursue the kingdom of heaven and eternal life.

Such training—rooted in the world rather than in God—leads people to walk outside the light, even while they presume themselves to be righteous and to be walking ahead of Jesus. This is exactly what the Lord warned: the gate that leads to life is narrow, and the way is difficult, and few find it. For most choose religious falsehoods that require no self-denial or taking up the cross, thereby completely rejecting the narrow path that leads to heavenly glory.

1. Jesus Reveals to His Disciples the Vast Gap Between Man and God

Isaiah 55:8–9

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.”

This passage stands as a foundational cornerstone for the training of Jesus’ disciples. It is a sacred revelation that leads people into the way of truth and life. All who sincerely follow the Lord must receive it with reverence and carry it out with a pure and undiluted heart.

Yet throughout the generations, many who are highly esteemed—pastors, evangelists, theologians, and interpreters—have failed to grasp its true essence or uphold it with a reverent fear of God. As a result, they have unknowingly drifted from the true way. Some have added to, taken away from, adjusted, altered, or distorted the Word of God, causing the pure truth to be clouded by human thoughts and personal intentions.

Therefore, this passage issues a solemn and glorious call to the last generation: all who belong to the Lord must walk in holy fear, faithfully holding fast to every word of God, neither adding nor subtracting. With a heart of complete obedience, they must listen carefully and precisely to His voice. Only in this way can they walk in the true light, avoid falling into rebellion, and instead become faithful servants who are pleasing to God and who prepare the way for the Lord.

God created the universe, whose observable extent is about 93 billion light-years. Yet the distance between God’s Word and the limits of human understanding is far greater than even this vast measure.

Jesus spoke the following words, which clearly demonstrate that God’s thoughts are higher than human thoughts:

John 16:12–13

“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. But when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth.”

John 3:8

“The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

John 8:23

“You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.”

1 Timothy 6:16

“He alone is immortal and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen.”

A Great Spiritual Warning: Do Not Alter the Word of God

Many well-known pastors, evangelists, theologians, and Bible teachers, when preaching the gospel of Jesus, may add to, subtract from, modify, adjust, or distort God’s Word to establish their own philosophies or theological systems. This is an act of departing from and rebelling against God. What God values is not human wisdom or skill, but complete obedience and faithfulness to His Word.

Deuteronomy 4:2

“You shall not add to what I command you nor take away from it, but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you.”

Revelation 22:18–19

“If anyone adds to these words, God will add to that person the plagues described in this book. And if anyone takes away from these words, God will take away their share in the tree of life and in the holy city.”

The Bible is filled with solemn warnings:

Eve added her own interpretation when quoting God’s command, and was deceived into eating the forbidden fruit.

Moses, when acting in a way that misrepresented God, was not permitted to enter the Promised Land.

Saul disobeyed God by keeping the best of the Amalekite livestock under the pretense of sacrifice, and was rejected as king.

False prophets and some of the people of Judah spoke visions from their own hearts, not from the mouth of the Lord—this is adding to and falsifying God’s Word.

Jeroboam set up golden calves, altered the place of worship, festivals, and priesthood, leading people away from God’s law and true worship.

A man of God from Judah disobeyed God’s specific instruction not to eat or drink there and not to return the same way, and was killed by a lion.

The Pharisees and scribes were rebuked by Jesus: “You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men… Woe to you, hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces; you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.”

Are not many world-loving religious leaders today repeating these same acts of disobedience?

A true disciple of Jesus must fully obey God’s Word and reject man-made religion. A genuine disciple must never add to, subtract from, alter, or distort God’s Word. Through the examples of Eve, Moses, Saul, Jeroboam, and false prophets, Scripture warns that replacing God’s will with human ideas is rebellion against God and will inevitably bring His judgment.

2. Jesus Clearly Defines the Nature of His Disciples

Luke 14:26–27

“If anyone comes to Me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be My disciple. And whoever does not carry their own cross and follow Me cannot be My disciple.”

This passage stands as the foundation and cornerstone of Jesus’ disciple training, the unshakable spiritual starting point for all who would follow the Lord. It is not merely a teaching, but a holy line of distinction between true disciples and nominal believers.

If a person has not truly resolved in their heart—and diligently sought to live out—the call to “love Christ above all, even above one’s own family and life,” then they have not yet crossed the threshold of discipleship. For the Lord has never called for superficial following, but for total surrender and a love without reservation.

If one remains self-centered, placing personal affections or even life itself above Christ, then though they may participate in various forms of disciple training and evangelistic work, and appear zealous, they will bear no heavenly fruit. Their foundation is not yet established in Christ, and their life is not truly united with Him.

Therefore, this passage issues a solemn and glorious call to all who desire to follow the Lord: lay aside every lesser love, exalt Christ as the supreme Lord of your life, and give Him first place. Only then will one’s following be genuine, one’s service firmly rooted, and one’s life fruitful without end—truly sharing in Christ and becoming a disciple who belongs to Him.

Jesus further spoke the following words to clearly define the character of His disciples:

Matthew 10:37

“Anyone who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; anyone who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. Whoever does not take up their cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me.”

Luke 14:33

“In the same way, any one of you who does not give up everything they have cannot be My disciple.”

Matthew 16:24–25

“If anyone desires to follow Me, they must deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for My sake will find it.”

Matthew 10:34–36

“Do not think that I came to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a person’s enemies will be members of their own household.”

In these statements, the Lord Jesus makes it unmistakably clear that many people are unwilling—and unable—to accept this principle: loving Jesus must come before loving one’s own family and even one’s own life. Yet they still claim to be Christians and even presume that they can train others to be His disciples.

3. Jesus Enables His Disciples to Experience His Manifestation

John 14:21

"The one having My commands and keeping them is the one loving Me. The one loving Me will be loved by My Father, and I too will love him and reveal Myself to him.”

From this passage, we understand that only those who are set apart can truly receive God’s holy Word within their hearts. Otherwise, it would be like drawing water with a basket—an empty and fruitless effort. If a person is not set apart, how can they continually meditate on the words of Jesus day and night, and obey Him with all their heart and soul?

The words of Jesus are the expression of Jesus Himself; His words are the working of the Holy Spirit. Within His words reside God’s power and profound, mysterious wisdom. Whoever wholeheartedly obeys the words of Jesus will surely witness the power and the deep spiritual reality contained within His words being revealed.

This passage is the foundation and cornerstone of Jesus’ disciple training. The Word of God is not merely words—it is God Himself revealed. If a person does not treasure and remember God’s Word, meditate on it day and night, faithfully obey it at all times, and abide continually in His presence, then their heart is not truly filled with God. Such a person has no real share in Him and cannot continually behold Jesus.

But the one who holds fast to the Word, who lives in it and walks by it, will remain in God, and God in them. In this abiding, their eyes are opened to see Christ, and their life is sustained in His living presence.

4. In Christ: Jesus Leads His Disciples into His Indwelling Presence

John 14:23

Jesus answered, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.”

From this passage, it is clear that only by keeping Jesus’ word can a person receive His indwelling presence. Only then can one abide in Christ, be born again in Him, and become a new creation. If a person does not keep Jesus’ word, how can they have any share in Him? And if they have no share in Christ, how can they truly serve God or glorify Him?

This passage, therefore, stands as the foundation and cornerstone of Jesus’ disciple training. If a person cannot confirm that Christ truly dwells within them, then all their participation in disciple training and evangelistic work is disconnected from Him and is not pleasing to God.

Jesus further makes this truth unmistakably clear by defining love for God as obedience to His word:

John 14:15

“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.”

John 15:10

“If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.”

1 John 5:3

“For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.”

Even in the Old Testament, this same principle is revealed:

Deuteronomy 10:12–13

“And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways, to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments and statutes of the Lord, which I command you today for your good?”

Thus, Jesus clearly defines that to know Him is to obey His commandments. Those who truly love God will keep His word. Only by fully obeying Jesus’ commands can a person receive His indwelling presence, experience God’s love and revelation, enter the kingdom of heaven, and inherit eternal life.

No religious activity, human tradition, or outward form of godliness can replace obedience to the will of God. Only those who obey can truly know Jesus, be known by Him, and become His genuine disciples.

5. Those Who Are Known by Jesus and Can Enter the Kingdom of Heaven

Matthew 7:21

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who continually does the will of My Father who is in heaven.”

Matthew 7:22

“On that day many will say to Me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’”

Matthew 7:23

“Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from Me, you evildoers!’”

From these passages, it is clear that only those who continually do the will of God can enter the kingdom of heaven and receive eternal life. Those who may heal the sick, cast out demons, and preach the gospel—yet do not obey God’s will—are rejected and not recognized by Jesus.

These passages are the foundation and cornerstone of Jesus’ disciple training. If a person cannot be certain that the path they are walking will ultimately lead to entering the Kingdom of Heaven and receiving eternal life, then all their participation in disciple training and evangelistic work is without true meaning. In the end, they may become those whom Jesus does not acknowledge—those who, in God’s sight, are counted among evildoers.

Scripture further clarifies that to know Jesus is to obey His commandments:

1 John 2:3–5

“We know that we have come to know Him if we keep His commands. Whoever says, ‘I know Him,’ but does not do what He commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys His word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in Him.”

From these passages, we see that Jesus clearly defines the nature of His disciples: they must love God more than their own family and even their own lives; they must deny themselves, receive the indwelling of Christ, take up their cross, and forsake everything to follow Him. The life of a true disciple of Jesus is a complete surrender to God and a transformation of life—not a pursuit of worldly knowledge or religious procedures.

Conclusion: Becoming Light in a Dark Generation

In these last days, the disciples of Jesus are not only called to be set apart, to guard holiness, and to become holy—they are also called to carry the truth of Christ like a shining lamp, swiftly proclaiming it to the ends of the earth, preparing the way for the return of the King.

God calls all who follow Jesus to stand firm: not to love the world, nor conform to it; not to follow the patterns of this age; not to embrace human traditions; not to befriend the world; not to indulge the desires of the flesh; and not to worship or serve mammon.

God calls every disciple of Jesus to deny themselves, to obey His commands, to abide in Christ, to walk in the light, and to labor together with Him. They are to take up their cross and follow Christ, living continually in the fear of God—giving thanks, offering praise, trusting, obeying, serving, and glorifying Him—so that the gospel may become a powerful testimony that honors the Lord, as they watch and wait for His coming.

Only in this way can the disciples of Jesus stand firm in a troubled generation and become true light that shines in the darkness, fulfilling the great calling and spiritual commission entrusted to them. Only in this way can they truly know Jesus, walk in fellowship with the Holy Spirit, experience His indwelling and manifestation, and receive the blessing of eternal life and the kingdom of heaven.
