The Powerful Testimony of the Risen Lord: Seeing the Reality of Christ’s Resurrection Through the Life of Paul

The Powerful Testimony of the Risen Lord: Seeing the Reality of Christ’s Resurrection Through the Life of Paul

The very foundation of the Christian faith rests upon a real historical event—the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. If Christ had not risen, Christianity would have no foundation. But if Jesus truly rose from the dead, then everything He taught and proclaimed carries eternal authority. For this reason, the apostles placed the testimony of the risen Christ at the center of their preaching.

The New Testament records that after His resurrection, Jesus did not appear only to a small group of close disciples. Rather, during the forty days following His resurrection, He appeared to many people, including Mary Magdalene and other women, Peter, the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, the Twelve Apostles, seven disciples in Galilee, James, all the apostles, more than five hundred believers at one time, and later the Apostle Paul on the road to Damascus. These witnesses came from different backgrounds, personalities, and circumstances, yet they all testified to the same truth: Jesus Christ had truly risen from the dead.

Among these testimonies, the witness of the Apostle Paul provides one of the most compelling demonstrations of the transforming power of the risen Christ. Paul, formerly known as Saul, was once a fierce persecutor of the church who sought to arrest and punish Christians. However, after encountering the risen Jesus, his life was completely transformed. He became one of the most faithful messengers of the Gospel. Paul willingly endured suffering, imprisonment, and ultimately death because he knew with certainty whom he had believed. Through these authentic testimonies, we see that the resurrection of Jesus is not merely a historical event—it is a living reality that continues to transform lives and offer the hope of eternal life today.

I. The Bible Records That Many People Saw the Risen Jesus

1 Corinthians 15:3–8

For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve. After that, He appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all He appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.

The author of First Corinthians is the Apostle Paul. From this passage, we learn that the Twelve Apostles saw the risen Jesus. Later, more than five hundred believers witnessed Him at the same time. Paul himself also testified that he saw the risen Christ.

II. The Bible Records Paul’s Encounter with Jesus

Acts 9:3–5

As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me?”

“Who are You, Lord?” Saul asked.

“I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” He replied.

The Book of Acts was written by Luke, a well-educated physician and a close companion of Paul during his missionary journeys. Luke records Paul’s dramatic encounter with the risen Jesus on the road to Damascus.

III. Paul Personally Testified Before the People

Acts 22:6–11

In this passage, Paul publicly recounts his experience:

“About noon as I came near Damascus, suddenly a bright light from heaven flashed around me. I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me?’

“I asked, ‘Who are You, Lord?’

“He answered, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.’”

Paul clearly testified before the people that he had personally encountered the risen Jesus Christ.

According to church records dating from the late second and early third centuries AD, Paul was executed by beheading. Because he was a Roman citizen, he was exempt from the more brutal punishment of crucifixion and was instead executed near the Via Ostiensis outside Rome. Centuries later, Emperor Constantine honored Paul’s memory by building the famous Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls on the traditional site associated with him.

If Paul had never encountered the risen Christ, it is difficult to explain why he would willingly suffer persecution, imprisonment, and death for his testimony. His unwavering commitment strongly supports the sincerity of his witness.

From the biblical record and the dramatic transformation of Paul’s life, Christians have long concluded that Paul truly saw the risen Jesus. Therefore, the resurrection is not merely a theological idea but a reality that confirms the truth of Christ’s message and His testimony concerning God.

Conclusion

The testimony of Scripture and the witness of the apostles present the resurrection of Jesus as an event supported by numerous eyewitnesses. More than five hundred believers saw the risen Christ at one time. The apostles saw Him. Most remarkably, Paul—a man who once fiercely opposed Christianity—also encountered the risen Lord personally. As a result, their lives were completely transformed, and they were willing to sacrifice everything, even their own lives, to proclaim this message.

Paul’s life is especially worthy of reflection. He once took pride in persecuting Christians, yet after meeting the risen Jesus, he devoted himself entirely to God’s service. He endured hardships, beatings, imprisonment, and ultimately death because he was convinced that he had truly seen the risen Lord. This conviction enabled him to declare with confidence, “I know whom I have believed.”

The risen Jesus is not merely a teacher of truth; He is the living Savior who redeems humanity. He continues to call people to seek the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and He continues to lead them on the path that leads to eternal life.

The risen Christ appeared to His disciples, and He continues to reveal Himself to those who sincerely seek Him. When we believe in the resurrection of Jesus, we can have confidence that the Father whom He revealed is the true God, that the salvation He promised is real, and that the eternal life He offers is certain.

May we, like Paul, not only believe in the risen Lord but also be willing to deny ourselves, take up our cross, follow Him faithfully, and bear witness to Him until the day we see Him face to face. Amen.
